Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with advance resuscitation and stabilization.
- Safely administers oxygen therapy via incubator, head box, nasal cannulae and facially, including adequate humidification as prescribed.
- Initiate respiratory support via the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
- Safely care for the baby requiring all methods of mechanical ventilation including CPAP.
- Use safe and effective ETT, oral and nasal suction techniques.
- Assist in perform extubation.
- Assist with elective / emergency intubation.
- Assist with the insertion / removal of chest drainage.
- Provide care for neonate with chest drainage.
- Safely carry out all form of enteral feeding.
- Safely administer intravenous therapy recognizing and reporting deviations and complications.
- Measure and interpret intake and output.
- Calculate intake requirements.
- Monitor growth and development through measurement of weight and head circumference.
- Obtain capillary blood sample to measure and monitor blood glucose level, reporting deviations.
- Initiate phototherapy according to jaundice guidelines.
- Care for the baby requiring phototherapy.
- Care for the baby receiving exchange and partial transfusion.
- Assist and support mothers to breastfeed.
- Recognize normal behavior in babies’ different gestations, including sleep / awake states. Report deviations from normal.
- Implement and ensure strict compliance with infection control prevention guidelines.
- Performs aseptic and non touch techniques.
- Assess neonatal body temperature using appropriate methods and site, report deviations from normal.
- Use appropriate strategies to maintain body temperature within normal limits, including environmental aspects, clothing and equipments.
- Perform routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures according to protocol and guidelines. Implement prescribed management.
- Assist in the care of babies requiring special care or high dependency undergoing non invasive and invasive care investigation and procedures.
- Measure blood pressure using non-invasive techniques reporting deviation from normal.
- Administer drug via oral, topical, rectal and intravenous routes according to policies and procedures. Assess the therapeutic response, identify side effects and report appropriately.
- Thorough assessment of newborn infants.
- Attending high risk deliveries and assisting with the resuscitation of the newborn.
- Ensure that all requirements for admission are ready and functioning prior to arrival of neonates.
- Set-up and test equipment necessary for care of babies.
- Clean and store equipment after use.
- Efficiently and safely use equipment necessary for care of babies.
- Interprets significance of equipment alarms.
- Transfers and admits extremely ill neonates to or from, the neonatal unit, including complex life support therapies.
- Documents all care information concisely, accurately and completely in a timely manner.
